EndNote 21:  Manually

Manage your references and create in-text citations and reference list

Entering records manually

Manually creating records

Although EndNote can import from hundreds of databases and catalogues it may still be necessary to add records manually.

To manually create an EndNote record:

  • Select References | New Reference from the EndNote toolbar (or click on the New Reference iconManual entry).  This will open a New Reference Window.

  • By default the New Reference Window is set for the entry of journal articles. Select other reference types by clicking on the drop-down arrow to the right of Journal Article.
  • Enter citation details into the fields provided, see details in the Choosing a reference type section below.
  • When finish, Click the Save button.
Manually enter a new reference

Choosing a reference type

You need to choose the most appropriate reference type for each of your EndNote records, so that they are formatted and displayed correctly in your document.

Aim to be familiar with your referencing style so that you know how a particular reference type should display when it is correctly formatted - see our referencing guide for examples of the most common reference styles used at UON, and refer to a style manual if there is one for your referencing style. Use the summary tab in EndNote to check for errors.

The following table may help you choose the correct referencing type for each of your EndNote records.
