What is Academia.edu?

Academia

Academia.edu is a for-profit social networking platform for researchers.There are two versions of Academia.edu: a free and a subscription based version. 

N.b. It is not connected with any educational institution. 

Why use Academia.edu?

  • The free version of Academia.edu will allow you to create an account and download research papers. N.b. Copyright limitations of publishers should be considered when uploading your research.

  • The subscription version of Academia.edu (Academia Premium) provides access to more research papers and other features not included in the free version. 

  • Discussion panels allow you to connect and ‘follow’ other researchers in your field  

  • Academia.edu results often appear high in Google searches which provides an opportunity to further promote your research. 

  • You can add your Academia.edu profile link to ORCID 

How to use Academic.edu

Think before use

Before uploading research to Academia.edu you need to consider the following: 

  • Be aware of any confidentiality, copyright or security issues associated with uploading your publication to Academia.edu. Contact the UON Scholarly Publishing team for more advice

  • Publishers may have limitations on what you can share on particular platforms. Academia.edu is a commercial social networking site and is NOT an institutional repository so you will need to look for your publishers’ guidelines in relation to uploading papers to these sites 

  • Commercial sites like Academia.edu are subject to ‘take down’ notices from publishers. 

  • Government funding bodies may advise against relying on the use of commercial, social media platforms such as Academia.edu as a way for meeting open access compliance requirements. Visit the open access policy requirements from ARC for more information. 

  • From the Academia.edu site select the sign up link to create an Account. You can choose the version of Academia that suits your needs.

  • Researchers can submit papers directly through their Academia.edu account or directly from the website. Sign in add you publications.
