Note: Due to the recent upgrade of the library system,  the online search UON library catalogue may return an “Error searching for records” message. If so, please download and use the updated connection file (U Newcastle Aust 2023) instead. See the instructions below.

The Online Search Mode allows you to search library catalogues or databases and add the references, all from within your EndNote library.

Some of the connection files you might find useful are: PubMed, University of Newcastle Library catalogue, Library of Congress catalogue, Jisc Library Hub Discover, and other Australian University Library catalogues.

Use the Online Search Mode in 5 steps:

  1. Select Online Search from the Groups panel located at the left of the EndNote window 
  2. Click on the connection required in the list, or select more… to view the complete list of the EndNote connection files.
  3. Enter your search terms, then click Search. The results will appear in the Retrieve Results box below. 
  4. Mark the records you would like to save, then click the plus sign () to add the selected references to your library
  5. When you have finished searching, click  All References to return to your EndNote library.

Although importing records can save you a lot of time, it is important to understand that it is not always 100% accurate.  This means that it is essential to carefully check the records imported, and correct any mistakes or inaccuracies. 

Mistakes in the records in your library will translate into mistakes in your in-text citations and reference list entries.

 

Use the Updated Connection File for Online Search UON Library Catalogue 2023

 

Due to the recent upgrade of the library system, the online search may return an “Error searching for records” message. If so, please download and use the updated connection file following the instructions below.

Download the updated connection file

  1. Download the updated U Newcastle Aust 2023 confection file here. 
  2. Double click on the downloaded file to open it in EndNote.
  3. Click File > Save As to save it.

Use the updated connection file in EndNote

  1. Open your EndNote library
  2. Click the plus (+) sign next to Online Search on the left of screen
  3. In the Find A Connection window, find and highlight the U Newcastle Aust 2023 file 
  4. Click Choose to add it to the Online Search menu
