The physiotherapy discipline requires undergraduate students to use the JAMA Style. The JAMA Style is based on the AMA Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors (10th edition). Print copies of the manual are included in the University Libraries - see the Library catalogue for details.

JAMA reference guidelines are to be followed precisely, including punctuation, capitalisation, and formatting. 

The JAMA Style requires:

  • In-text citations to identify references with superscript Arabic numerals.
  • Number references in the order they appear in the text; do not alphabetize.
  • The list of references to begin on a new page at the end of the written assignment.
  • List all authors and/or editors up to 6; if more than 6, list the first 3 followed by “et al.”
  • For journal references - abbreviate the names of journals (as noted below) and include the issue number in parentheses after the volume number.
