How to get the most out of studying online

Online learning and face-to-face learning have a lot of similarities.

Ideally

  • ten hours per 10 units of course study each week is required;
  • you will submit assessment tasks as outlined by your lecturer and tutor;
  •  maximum class attendance will give you the most from your program.

However, there is one key difference you should consider when you enrol; you are learning in isolation when you complete an online course.

To counter the isolation, attend as many online lectures and tutorials as you can. You can switch your camera and microphone off until you are ready for ‘live’ participation. Focused engagement with your course content, your student cohort, and your teacher will alleviate the effects of learning in isolation.

Your teacher may pre-record the lecture, or place weekly modules into your Blackboard course site. So it is important that you schedule your time to complete the weekly activities, whatever they may be.

When completing your online activities, use the discussion board to reach out to your cohort. As well as gaining insight to the ways that  students are understanding the content, discussing the concepts being learned will deepen your own knowledge.

Your course co-ordinator, lecturer and tutor will be your primary contacts during your study; however, there are other contacts within the university who can also assist you to successfully complete your course(s).
