How to write a journal article review: Read your article carefully

Read your article carefully

  • It is important to read your article carefully.
  • Academic reading is different to reading a newspaper, or the reading that you do when scrolling through social media.
  • Academic reading is a learned skill, and one that will improve each time you do it.

  • Read selectively and make notes! Effective note making means you can put your articles to one side and write the review from your notes. Writing the review in your own words will show the depth of your understanding. Use the 'highlight and annotate' strategy found here to make effective notes.
  • Your writing must accurately cite your sources, so remember to make note of your references as you use them.
  • Go here for help with how to accurately reference your sources.
  • Find other sources (as directed by your task instructions) to support the argument you will make about your primary article.
  • Read your supporting sources using the same reading methods you practised for your primary article.
