Note taking in lectures and tutorials

Taking your own notes in lectures and tutorials is an essential skill for academic study. Noting ideas and information in your own words, and reviewing your notes after the lecture, will help you consolidate your understanding of relevant points, so that you can then incorporate them into your academic writing and speaking. Taking notes also helps you concentrate; having something active to do keeps you focused and engaged.

Everyone eventually develops their own method of note taking, so try some of the methods suggested here until you work out what best suits your purposes. Most importantly though, organise your notes in a logical way. They will be invaluable to you when you are preparing for assignments and exams.
