Assessment 2: Essay Plan
Topic
  • Write an essay plan for the topic: 'Explain the ways speakers use language differently in different social settings'.
  • Use 3 of your own language examples, and for each, explain the choice of style, which particular feature (phonology, vocabulary, or grammar) identifies it as belonging to that specific style, and how the social setting and social relationship between interlocutors influenced this choice.
  • You may also wish to include the issue of formal versus informal language, and that language use is not about what is “right” or “wrong” but more about what is appropriate in different social settings.
Resources needed

  • At least 4 academic sources (books, journal articles):
  • At least one of these needs to be a journal article
  • This is in addition to using your textbook
  • Do not use sources on the web
Referencing style
Example Library catalogue searches
  • sociolinguistics
  • language AND "social settings"
