Keeping up-to-date

Many databases allow users to register, then set up alerts to send notifications when new citing references have been added.

Follow the steps below to set up citation alerts in Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar.

Scopus

Ensure that you have signed into your personal Scopus account (see links at the top right of the Scopus screen).

  • To set up an alert for an article, display the publication record,
  • Click Set citation alert
  • Name the alert, ensure the email address is correct, and nominate the frequency (daily/weekly/monthly) you would like the alert email sent, then click Set alert

  • To set up an alert for all publications by an author, search for the author, then click the author's name to display the Author details page, click Set alert
  • On the Set alert window - rename the alert if required, select Author citation alert, then nominate the frequency (daily/weekly/monthly) you would like the alert email sent.
  • Click Set author citation alert.
You can change settings or delete an alert on the Alerts page. Setting an alert to ‘Inactive’ status does not delete the alert.
Dimensions

Ensure you have signed into Dimensions using your University email and password.

  • To set up an alert for all publications by an author, search for the author using the "view more" search bar in the Researchers tab in the left-hand menu.
  • Select the researcher you are interested in, then click "add to search".
  • From there, you can save your search using the save button on the very right-hand side of the page, next to the search bar.

You can see your favourited searches in the Favourites (star icon) tab in the left-hand menu.
Google Scholar
  • A Google Scholar Profile needs to be set up first. Follow the steps on the University of Newcastle Google Scholar Profiles Library Guide.
  • Once the profile is made Public click the Follow button
  • On the Follow this author window, select New citations to this author, enter your email address, then click Done.
