Indigenous research

When conducting Indigenous research you need to understand and acknowledge any cultural and ethical considerations and conduct your research with integrity.

In this video University of Newcastle researcher, Shellie Smith, discusses what researchers should consider when working with Indigenous knowledge and materials.

The University of Newcastle’s Indigenous Education and Research Framework  defines Indigenous research as research that is:

  • Led by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Chief Investigator; and/or
  • Co-led and authored by an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander researcher; and/or
  • Partnering with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community or organisation as a research partner; and/or
  • Led by a non-Indigenous researcher and fully or partially about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander land, waters, culture and people.
