Quick Guide to Referencing: APA 6th

A quick referencing guide for Pathways & Learning Support students or anyone interested in common referencing style basics

APA 6th basics

The APA 6th style of referencing uses the author-date system.

  • Information sources are cited in-text and in a reference list
  • The Reference List contains all in-text references in alphabetical order at the end of the work
  • The APA 6th Style reference list requires:

    • the word 'References' (in upper and lower case) centered at the top of the page
    • all reference entries to be double-spaced
    • references are in a 'hanging indent' format.
      • (The first line of each reference is flush against the left margin and the subsequent lines of each reference are indented or .5 inch or 1.27 cm).
