Library Services for High School Students: Search Tips

Guide for library resources available to high school students

Boolean Operators

If you have multiple terms for the same keyword (synonyms), or just want to search for more than one keyword, combine with OR

Combine keywords using AND when it is important that your results include BOTH terms

Truncation, Wildcards, or phrase searching

  • Use truncations to locate words that feature different endings. For example by searching for Australi* the results can include Australia/Australian
  • Use wildcards to locate words for singular/plural and words of UK/US English spelling
e.g. by searching for wom?n the results will include women/woman
  • Use quotation marks to locate two or three words which appear together as a phrase
    e.g. "sociological imagination"

N.B. Check Help guides of databases as symbols used and search strategies can differ for each database.
