Working with the Australian National Data Service

The University of Newcastle has been working with the Australian National Data Service (ANDS) on an ANDS funded Seeding the Commons Project. This work also represents a working partnership between the Library, Research Services and IT Services. Our project commenced on 30 August 2010 and completed on 30 August 2011. During the project we have collaborated with the Australian Digital Futures Institute (ADFI) at University of Southern Queensland and with Swinburne University of Technology.

Project Activity

  • Collaboration with University of Southern Queensland on the design of a metatadata management system to capture and manage datasets and collections for harvest to Research Data Australia
  • Collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology on a resource toolkit for data management and interface feedback
  • Development of a Data Management Toolkit to raise awareness for good practice in data management
  • Implementation of a metadata store system for research data (ReDBox) and a Linked Data Name Authority Service (The MINT)
  • Identification, analysis, and description of research datasets
  • Published data collections and associated entity records to the Research Data Australia portal
  • Development of a sustainable service and support model for ongoing data management planning
  • Development of and increased capability and knowledge within the institution

About ReDBOX

ReDBox is a Metadata Store system that was developed in collaboration with USQ during our Seeding the Commons Project. The ReDBox and Mint systems have been implemented at the University of Newcastle and are utilised to successfully capture, store, and publish descriptive metadata records to Research Data Australia.ReDBox facilitates workflows that are managed and resourced by the University Library. In conjunction with ReDBox, services to support the creation of metadata for research datasets and promotion of good practice for data management are provided by the Library in a shared service model with Research Services and IT.

ReDBox/Mint Code

The ReDBox code is open source. The USQ development team have made the ReDBOX code available on Github: http://www.redboxresearchdata.com.au/development http://www.redboxresearchdata.com.au/development
