What is EBP?

Evidence is important in the health field because it informs practice. Evidence-based Practice, or EBP, is integrating the best available research evidence with clinical expertise and the patient’s unique values and circumstances to improve patient outcomes. [Sackett et al. 1996]

EBP is based on the recognition that:

  • Knowledge needs to be kept current and up-to-date
  • Knowledge can be wrong
  • The way research is done can influence the results   (i.e. bias can be introduced)
  • Clinical practice must be informed by the findings of the best quality research
  • Clinical staff must integrate this evidence with their clinical knowledge and expertise
  • Clinical staff and patients should make a decision together; based on this knowledge, the evidence and the individual patient's values and preferences.

Is EBP the same as EBM?

Evidence-based Practice (EBP) and Evidence-based Medicine (EBM) are often used interchangeably, but 'EBP' is considered more inclusive of different areas of health care and highlights the importance of applying evidence into actual practice.
