Tips & Tricks

Searching Newcat+
To find Books, DVDs etc... held in the library, select Library Catalogue limit left of your results.

What are Secondary Sources?  Journal articles, book chapters etc... written about a work, usually offering a critical view of that work.

What are Primary Sources?  Original works & uninterpreted information about an event or time.

Beware Wikipedia!
It can't be cited in academic essays (avoid sites where authors aren't accountable for contributions).

Evaluate! Evaluate! Evaluate!
Be critical about everything you read

Avoid Plagiarism
Don't use an author's work or ideas without referencing them (yes, even if it's not directly quoted & you've changed the wording)

Religion & Theology Books

Religious Objects in Museums - Crispin Paine
ISBN: 9781847887733
In the past, museums often changed the meaning of icons or statues of deities from sacred to aesthetic, or used them to declare the superiority of Western society, or simply as cultural and historical evidence. The last generation has seen faith groups demanding to control 'their' objects, and curators recognising that objects can only be understood within their original religious context. In recent years there has been an explosion of interest in the role religion plays in museums, with major exhibitions highlighting the religious as well as the historical nature of objects.

From the Inside Out - David Atwood
ISBN: 9780646569383
A systematic and inspiring examination of Quakers' involvement in achieving non-violent international outcomes, e.g. working against landmines and the small arms problem. Poses a challenge to Quakers worldwide to increase their effectiveness by communicating what they are doing, and the lessons learned, to each other and to the world.

World Religions Today - Esposito, Fasching & Lewis
ISBN: 9780199759514
This unique volume accomplishes two goals: it connects today's religions to their classical beliefs and practices and focuses on how these religions have responded to and been transformed by the modern world. The authors combine thorough coverage of the historical background of each religion with up-to-the-minute discussions of its current practices.

Cover Art
God's Empire - Hilary M. Carey
ISBN: 9780521194105
Charts Britain's nineteenth-century transformation from Protestant nation to free Christian empire through the history of the colonial missionary movement. This wide-ranging reassessment of the religious character of the second British empire provides a clear account of the promotional strategies of the major churches and church parties which worked to plant settler Christianity in British domains.

Cover Art
An Archaeology of Religion - Kit W. Wesler
ISBN: 9780761858454
Archaeologists have been increasingly turning their attention to the study of religion, but the field so far has lacked a cross-cultural overview. This text challenges archaeological conventions by refusing to respect the geographic and temporal boundaries with which archaeologists too often define their field.

Cover Art
The New Religious Intolerance - Martha C. Nussbaum
ISBN: 9780674065901
Drawing inspiration from philosophy, history, and literature, Nussbaum takes religious intolerance to task, identifies the fear behind it, and offers a way past with universal principles of respect for conscience.

Cover Art
Commentary on the Twelve Prophets - St Cyril of Alexandria
ISBN: 9780813201153
Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria (412-444), is best known as a protagonist in the christological controversy of the second quarter of the fifth century. Readers may be surprised therefore to find such polemic absent from this early work on the twelve minor prophets of the Old Testament.
